CLASS 2

General Excellence

1. Sierra Sun

“Fantastic community coverage and use of staff to fill majority of paper with well-written local content. Would like to see broader coverage on opinion page – particularly more letters. As for appearance, would like to see more consistent reproduction with press and climate muddy photos.”

Journalist of Merit

1. Sara Thompson, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Best Spot News Story

Honorable Mention:

Staff, Sierra Sun

“Historic”

“Good local reaction to historic events. However, were there no Republicans marching?”

Best Feature Story

1. Greyson Howard, Sierra Sun

“Great lead, really drops you onto the trail. Great details.”

3. Greyson Howard, Sierra Sun

“Trail blazers”

“Similar to winning story, not quite as visual, but more focused.”

2. Thomas Ranson, Lahontan Valley News

“An Olympic dream”

“Interesting story on Fallon athlete who hopes to reach the Olympics. It lacks in physical description, but explains his motivation well.”

3. Steve Yingling, Tahoe Daily Tribune

“Toomey recalls 1968 trials, Olympic Games”

“A flashback to history and what’s changed since he competed in the trials. The lead is intriguing, with Toomey trying to find a souvenir from the site and failing. But the story of that is buried deep. Need to focus first on what’s in the lead– tell the story of why he’s looking back at that time.”

Best Local Sports Column

2. Sylas Wright, Sierra Sun

“I liked the baseball fashion debate column and even the one on personal history with grandfather at college baseball games, but column lacks stories on local sports and those in competition.”

“This is more of a state wrestling preview than a feature.”

Local Sports Column

2. Joey Crandall, The Record-Courier

“The one column tabbed ‘commentary’ on the ending of an all-star classic football game was what lifted this columnist over others. I don’t think you need to tell readers it’s a commentary or analysis. It is a column and should be treated as such.”

3. Steve Yingling, Tahoe Daily Tribune

“Column on the family at the Viking Bowl was inspiring. But the multiple-choice column and the one on discipline weren’t as strong. Push yourself to write strong columns every week.”

Best Entertainment Writing

“Skiing”

“Very creative and fun idea.”

Best Sports Photo

1. Shanon Litz, The Record-Courier

The Tribune competed against other daily papers in the circulation category of 10,000 to 25,000 in the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association Better Newspaper Awards.

The Tribune’s Lake Tahoe Action magazine took first place for overall Arts and Entertainment coverage. The staff of Lake Tahoe Action includes editor Tim Parsons and writer Dan Thomas.

Certificates of achievement, listed as the top 10 percent of the submissions, also went to Kessel in the categories of Photo Essay, Breaking News Photo and Sports Photo. Meanwhile, The Tahoe Daily Tribune won numerous awards from the Nevada Press Association, including a first-place general excellence award for daily newspapers in its size class.

Tribune Visual Director Jonah M. Kessel won the association’s Journalist of Merit award, designed to encourage journalists with less than five years of newspaper experience. Other first-place awards won by the Tribune include best news feature story, best feature story, best local sports story, best local sports feature, best entertainment writing and best overall design.

Tribune photographers won first-place awards in categories including best spot news photo coverage, best multiple feature photos, best portrait, best illustrated photo and best sports photo.

The paper also received several awards for its advertising, including first place in advertising general excellence.

Meanwhile Kessel chalked up several awards outside of the California and Nevada newspaper contests. Kessel took first place honors in Editor and Publisher magazine’s 2008 Photos of the Year as well as the National Press Photographers Association, Region 10 where Kessel won first place for feature/multi-picture; second place for general news and third place for spot news; as well as third place, nationally for the monthly News Clip Contest.
